Answering Salt Lake City's Most Commonly Asked Mouse Questions
We get a lot of questions about mice. Many of these questions relate to mice in terms of their ability to be pests. Some are just general curiosities. If you have questions, perhaps you'll find answers here. These are a few of the most common mouse questions we get here at White Knight Pest Control.
Does one mouse mean I have an infestation?
Mice are the most common home-invading pests in the world. They like living with humans. In fact, some mouse species prefer living with us so much that there are no wild populations of these mice anywhere in the world. They only live inside man-made structures or in close proximity to these structures.
This is important to know because a mouse that gets into your home is likely to stay, no matter what you do to drive it out. That's why investing in professional rodent control in Salt Lake City is so important.
Do mice climb walls?
If a wall is porous or textured, a mouse can scale it. This is why it is good that your roof has an overhang. This stops mice from getting onto your roof and accessing any vulnerabilities up there. We recommend that you take a few steps to add to your defenses:
- Trim tree branches away from your roofline so mice can't jump down onto your roof.
- Put wire mesh in the openings of your downspouts to prevent mice from climbing up inside them.
- Remove objects that are against your exterior walls that can give mice a platform.
Do mice see in the dark?
Contrary to what you might think, mice do not have infrared vision and aren't able to see in the dark. The reason they can get around in low or no light is that they use their whiskers to locate surfaces around them and to navigate. This is one of the reasons they run along walls rather than in open spaces. If a mouse gets into your home, it will do quite well in the dark spaces inside your walls.

How Do I Keep Mice Out of My Home?
If you reduce the conditions that attract mice and seal potential entry points around your home, you'll have a good chance of keeping mice out. There are a few common spots that mice target:
- A mouse can make short work of chewing a hole through weatherstripping. Inspect your weatherstripping and door sweeps routinely and repair or replace them as necessary.
- It takes longer for a mouse to chew through a wooden door or window frame, but they can.
- A mouse will quickly access a ventilation exhaust outlet that is uncovered. If there is a cover, they'll use objects nearby to climb up and get near the cover. Move objects away from these to make it more difficult for mice to access this highly attractive point of entry.
- A mouse will chew on rotted wood. If you have any rotted sole plates, these should be addressed as they can give a mouse access to your wall voids.
- A gap around a pipe can easily be large enough to let a mouse into your home. It only takes a hole the size of a dime to let an adult mouse inside. Seal plumbing gaps with caulking.
