Five Simple Yet Effective Cockroach-Prevention Tips For Denver Property Owners
Cockroaches are amazing insects. They can survive high levels of radiation, grow skins that are resistant to chemicals, hold their breath for more than 40 minutes, and live without their head for a week. Yes, you read that correctly. A cockroach can live for a whole week without a head because it doesn't breathe through its mouth; it breathes through holes in its thorax. That's pretty cool. But as cool as the cockroach is, you don't want these insects inside your home. They're extraordinarily dirty insects. They feed on rotting organic matter and feces. If they get into your home, they are capable of spreading illnesses that can make you very sick. Today, we're going to offer up five simple, yet effective cockroach prevention tips to help you keep cockroaches out of your Denver home.
1. Reduce Exterior Attractants
Cockroaches are attracted to properties that provide moisture, food options, and harborage. If you reduce these, you can make your yard and perimeter less appealing to cockroaches. Here are a few suggestions:
- Bag your trash and store it in containers outside your home. Remove trash weekly. Clean receptacles if they develop a smell. Make sure receptacles have a cover or sealed lid. This removes an attractant, food source, and breeding site all in one.
- Clean your gutters and make sure there are no breaks in your system. This prevents over-saturation of the perimeter around your home which is ideal for cockroaches.
- Remove vegetation in your landscaping and keep things trimmed neatly. This allows for good airflow, which helps to keep the topsoil dry.
- Remove objects, especially piles of organic material such as leaves or wood. These are potential harborage for cockroaches. If cockroaches leave pheromones in these places, they can attract other cockroaches from quite a distance.
- Pick up dog droppings. Animal feces can function as a food source for cockroaches.
2. Seal Openings In Your Exterior
Cockroaches get in because they can. If you roll your sleeves up and seal potential entry points, you can make it more difficult for roaches to infest your property.
- Inspect your exterior doors. Replace weatherstripping, door sweeps, and damaged screens. Take doors off and adjust them if there are any gaps. Fill in holes in your frames and seal gaps around the outside of the frames.
- Inspect your exterior ground floor windows. Replace damaged screens and broken window panes.
- Seal cracks in your foundation walls.
3. Address Interior Food Sources
