How Much Do You Really Know About Harvester Ants In Dallas?
If you've lived in Dallas for a while, you've likely seen or heard about harvester ants. You may have even seen the bald spots they cause on lawns. These ants are fairly common, but how much do you really know about them? Do you know enough to protect your Dallas lawn? Do you know enough to keep them out of your home? Do you know enough to protect your family? We hope so! These ants can be a serious problem. Here's what you should know about harvester ants in Dallas:
What A Harvester Ant Looks Like
First of all, it is important that you recognize these ants when you see them. It can be a little difficult, as there are 22 species of harvester ants found in the United States, and all but one are found west of the Mississippi. Currently, Texas is home to 12 different species. Here are a few ways you may be able to tell harvester ants apart from other ants:
- Harvester ants range from orangey-red to brownish-black in color, depending on the species.
- Both the major workers and minor workers of this ant genera are polymorphic. They range in size from 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.
- Harvester ants have two nodes. These are found between the thorax and abdomen.
- Many harvester ant species have long hairs on their chins.
Another Way To Tell You Have Harvester Ants
When these ants come into your yard and create nests, you'll find vegetation missing around the entrance to their nests and along the routes they travel to forage for food. While certainly unsightly, this missing vegetation can help you identify these ants and track where they're nesting. The bare areas around these nests are usually circular.
Keeping Harvester Ants Out
When these ants come near your home, you can keep them out like any other ants in Dallas. Here are a few common tips we give for exclusion:
- Inspect your foundation walls for cracks. Use a foundation repair kit to seal what you can. If you have cracks that can't be sealed with a kit, it is definitely worth contacting a professional to have the cracks sealed. We have many harmful pests in Dallas.
- Inspect your doors and windows. You would be amazed at how many gaps and holes can be in these areas. A caulking gun is a great tool for this job. Use it to seal around your frames and to fill in any holes created by wood-damaging pests.
- Inspect foundation penetrations such as pipes or wires. These can be low to the ground and easily accessible to harvester ants and other pests.
The good news about harvester ants is that they don't prefer to be indoor pests. If they get in, they're likely coming in from the outside. Your exclusion efforts will help to prevent this and reduce indoor sightings.

The Concern About Harvester Ants
These ants can deliver painful stings that can leave sores on the skin. The venom of a harvester ant can be a serious health threat as it can get into the lymphatic system. These ants are known to kill animals that are unfortunate enough to walk around near their nests. You can take some comfort in knowing that foraging ants are reluctant to sting. If one of these ants crawls on you while you're relaxing on your deck, you're probably not going to get stung.
