How To Tell If It's Bed Bugs In Your Denver Home
Are you finding bites on your skin when you wake up? If so, it can have you wondering whether or not your Denver home has bed bugs. These bugs are popping up more and more, and most people don't know all that much about them. Let's take a little of the mystery out of identifying bed bugs in your home.
Are These Bed Bug Bites?
If you want to determine a bed bug infestation by examining the bites, there are a few ways you can do this. Bed bug bites have a few identifiable characteristics.
- Each bed bug bites more than once. If you have bites from one bed bug, they are likely to be in a short line or zig-zag pattern.
- Bed bugs congregate when they feed. If more than one bed bug has bitten you, the bites will follow a trail across your skin.
- Each bed bug typically bites three times. It doesn't take many bed bugs to leave lots of bites. Four bed bugs will leave twelve or more bites.
- Bed bug bites are usually associated with a rash. When the bites are numerous and the rash is severe, bite wounds from bed bugs can look like a rash caused by an allergic reaction to food, clothing, or something else.
What Bed Bug Bites Don't Look Like
There are many bugs that can bite you. They have identifiable characteristics. If you're aware of them, you may be able to rule bed bugs out.
- Flea bites are intensely itchy and often have scabs at the centers. Bed bug bites don't generally have scabs, and you're definitely not going to have every bite scabbed over. Furthermore, flea bites tend to be mostly around the ankles.
- Some spiders cause ulcers at the centers of the wounds. Bed bug bites never have ulcers at the center.
- Fire ants cause pustules at the centers of the wounds. There are no pustules at the centers of bed bug wounds.
- Chiggers leave multiple, inflamed bites near areas of the skin that are compressed, such as a belt line. They'll also typically attack soft tissue, such as skin folds, the crotch, armpits, or inner elbows. While bed bugs can attack these areas, they will not be confined to them. Keep in mind that chiggers are rare in Colorado.
- Mosquitoes can leave puffy bites. Bed bug bites are not puffy. They are firm.
Are These Bed Bugs?
If you see a bed bug in your Denver home, it is possible to not realize it is a bed bug. While you've probably seen a photo of an adult bed bug, it is important to realize that adult bed bugs are not likely to be seen inside your home, unless you uncover a location where they are hiding. This may occur when you lift a mattress up and examine a box spring, or look underneath the cushions on a couch. But, when you find a bed bug feeding on your skin, it is more likely to be an immature nymph. Here are the characteristics of an immature nymph:
- It will be between 1mm and 2mm.
- It will have tan skin.
- You may see black in its abdomen, or the abdomen will be bright red from blood inside.
- It will have six legs—not eight.

When You Don't See Bed Bugs
These bugs like to hide. You can examine every inch of a mattress, box spring, and bed frame and not see a single bug, yet still have them hiding inside your bed. The same is true of other furniture and electronics in your home. If you suspect you have bed bugs, and you want to have more concrete evidence, here are a few tips:
- Drag a debit card along the seams of your mattresses or box springs. This can dislodge material or insects inside these tight spaces. If you see skins, tiny white eggs, or insects, you have bed bugs.
- Look closely for tiny black fecal pellets, stains, streaks or patches. Bed bugs leave their excrement in the places they explore, and in the areas they feed.
- Examine your pillowcase, sheets, bedding, and furniture for bloodstains. These are likely to be brown, as bed bugs feed at night and the blood has time to dry.
- Use your nose to look for bed bugs as well. These insects give off a scent that some describe as a locker room towel. If you detect something that smells a little "off," it could be bed bugs.
