Salt Lake City's Ultimate Ant Prevention Guide

There are so many ant species in Salt Lake City that it's hard to know what ants you're dealing with. We have pavement ants, field ants, carpenter ants, fire ants, raspberry crazy ants, and the list goes on and on. While each ant species is somewhat different in terms of what is required to get control of them, there are general tips that can work to prevent all types of ants from getting into your Salt Lake City home. Here's what you need to know:

Store Food In Sealed Containers

If ants find their way into your pantry or kitchen cabinets, make sure they don't find easy access to your foods. We recommend putting your stored food products in sealed glass or plastic containers to keep smells in and ants out.

Clean Clean Clean

It doesn't take much food to feed an ant. Make sure to keep your counters, shelves, cabinets, floors, and rugs clean. If you bring food into your living room, be sure to clean couches, chairs, and other furniture that can capture crumbs and other food remnants.

Put Pet Food Away

If you have a dog or cat, their food can be food for ants. We recommend putting food and water down only during meal times, and never overnight.

Do Inspections

If you have kids, your kids can feed the ants. They have a way of leaving food behind in hidden places. We know that life is tough when you're raising kids, but it pays to take a few minutes to do a quick inspection. You might find a banana peel behind the couch. You might find an apple behind the entertainment center. You could find an empty yogurt cup under a bed. It is best that you find those food sources before ants do.

Manage Your Trash

Many ants are attracted to the scent of rotting organic matter. Interior and exterior trash can be an attractant for ants. Make sure to keep trash in trash bags. Keep trash bags in trash receptacles. Keep covers closed on receptacles. Remove trash routinely before organic items inside are able to rot. If trash is left in a receptacle for more than a week, consider washing the receptacle to remove the odor. Keep in mind that trash bags can have liquids in the bottom. If you place a bag down, you could create a damp spot that is a strong attractant for ants. Move your trash directly from your interior receptacle to your exterior receptacle.

Remove Water Sources

Water is a building block of life. When ants get into your home, they seek moisture and standing water. A leaky faucet or pipe can create the dampness ants need. Repair plumbing issues as quickly as possible.

Seal Your Exterior

When ants crawl around on the outside of your home (and you know they will) it is important that they don't easily find a way into your home.

Here are a few common entry points ants use:

Gaps and cracks around doors and windows
Damaged screens
Holes that mice and rats have chewed
Cracks in foundation walls
Open spaces around pipes
Chipped mortar
Unprotected weep holes
