The Best Way To Handle Ant Problems On Your Phoenix Property
An ant is an ant, right? Unfortunately, this couldn't be further from reality. While ants share similarities, such as three body parts, two antennae, and six legs, different ant species vary widely in terms of habitat and food preferences, the threats they pose, and what is needed to control them. If you have little black ants crawling around in your yard, they could be harmless pavement ants or they could be destructive carpenter ants. If you have red ants in your yard, they could be fire ants, and those little red devils can present a risk to anyone who has an allergy. All ants can get into your trash and spread harmful bacteria to food-storage areas, but some, like Pharaoh ants, present a unique threat as they can pick up disease-causing organisms from the open wounds of pets, livestock, and wild animals. So, what is the best way to handle ant problems? Let's break it down.
How Should You Handle Carpenter Ants?
If an ant poses a threat to your property, it should definitely be handled by a licensed professional. In our area, carpenter ants damage property when they nest inside the wood. When you see black ants, it is important that you know how to properly identify a carpenter ant. While carpenter ants are the largest pest ants you'll see on your property, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a 1/4 inch-long minor carpenter ant worker and a ⅛ inch-long odorous house ant worker. Here are a few helpful characteristics to look for:
- Carpenter ants are nocturnal.
- Carpenter ants have one node at the waist, between the thorax and the abdomen.
- Carpenter ant workers are polymorphic (meaning they range in size).
- Carpenter ant workers range in size from 1/4 to 5/8 inches in length.
- Winged carpenter ants are about twice as large as the workers and can be over an inch long.
How Should You Handle Fire Ants?
It is unpleasant to be stung by fire ants but they can also present a threat, as we mentioned above. The symptoms of fire ant allergy can be unexpected and life-threatening. While severe and life-threatening symptoms are rare, it is possible to die quickly and unexpectedly from anaphylaxis brought on by a fire ant sting. You should familiarize yourself, and your loved ones, with the symptoms. Due to this threat, we recommend professional ant control for these ants.
In our area, we have three fire ant species. Minor workers from these three species may be as small a 1/10 of an inch in length. The major workers can be as large as 1/3 of an inch. This is only slightly larger than the smallest carpenter ant.
You can get some control of fire ants by keeping trash in sealed containers and by keeping the containers clean. Fire ants are drawn to protein food sources of any kind. To keep them out of your home, do a detailed inspection of your exterior walls and seal any openings you find.
