What You Should Know About Dangerous Cockroaches In Houston 

Cockroaches are exceptionally dirty insects. They crawl around in sewers. They feed on decaying animals and feces. They lay their eggs in the unmentionable grossness that can be found in the bottom of trash bins and dumpsters. So it shouldn't surprise you when we tell you that cockroaches in your Houston home can make you very sick. But once they get into your home, won't you be safer? Won't newly hatched roaches be cleaner than those that came in from outside? Let's take a closer look.

Cockroaches In Houston

In Houston, there are three cockroach species we see most. German cockroaches top the list because they do very well inside man-made structures. On the other side of the spectrum are Oriental cockroaches, which prefer damp environments and are more likely to be found in exterior locations.

The American cockroach can do well inside and outside but prefers high levels of humidity when it becomes an indoor pest. While these cockroaches differ in their habitat preferences, they all gravitate to dirty environments both inside and outside of your home.

Cockroach Habitats 

If something smells bad to you, it smells wonderful to a cockroach. When you forget to put your trash out for curbside pickup, your trash bin can start to have a scent of decay. This scent can be strong enough to detect from several feet away—and that's probably as close as you want to get to it. Cockroaches can smell a dirty trash bin from a distance, but they aren't repulsed by that smell. They're attracted. This is why you open your trash bins and find cockroaches crawling around on the bags inside. As cockroaches crawl on trash, they pick up microorganisms on the spines of their legs and their skin. These microorganisms don't harm cockroaches, but they can make you very sick when they are transferred to your countertops, food-prep surfaces, dishes, silverware, and stored foods.

When cockroaches hatch inside your home, they can go in and out of your home. They aren't confined. But, even if roaches don't go outside, they can be exposed to microorganisms in many ways. They can climb inside your interior trash. They can get down into your drains. They can climb on a dirty mop in your storage room. They can come in contact with rotting food or juices on the side of your oven or underneath your fridge.

Perhaps the most disturbing environment for a cockroach is your bathroom. A roach will crawl around in your bathroom trash, walk on the rim of your toilet, and get into your bathroom cabinets, where you may have chemicals stored. They're also prone to nibbling on the toothpaste in the bristles of your toothbrush. This can make you sick.

While you can't keep all cockroaches from getting into your home, you can resist repeated entry. Check your doors and windows for gaps, cracks, and holes. Inspect your foundation walls, especially around pipes that pass through your walls. Use a caulking gun to fill holes in and seal gaps. Replace damaged weather stripping, door sweeps, and screens.
